Insulin Sensitivity
The degree to which cells respond to insulin's signal to take up glucose. Cannabis users show improved insulin sensitivity in epidemiological studies, and THCV improves glycemic control in clinical trials.
In Depth
Paradoxically, despite cannabis's appetite-stimulating effects, epidemiological studies consistently show lower rates of obesity and diabetes in cannabis users. Proposed mechanisms include CB1 receptor-mediated effects on adipose tissue metabolism, THCV's CB1 antagonism reducing insulin resistance, and CBD's PPAR-γ activation improving metabolic function. A Phase 2 trial of THCV showed improved fasting plasma glucose and adiponectin in type 2 diabetes patients.
