Spasticity

A motor disorder characterized by velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone, resulting from upper motor neuron lesions. A primary indication for nabiximols (Sativex) in multiple sclerosis.

In Depth

MS-related spasticity affects 60–90% of people with MS and significantly impairs quality of life. Nabiximols (Sativex) is approved in over 30 countries for MS spasticity based on multiple RCTs showing significant reductions in patient-reported spasticity scores. The mechanism involves CB1 receptor-mediated reduction of glutamate and GABA release in spinal cord circuits. THC is the primary active component for spasticity, with CBD potentially moderating adverse effects.
