Cannabis-Induced Psychosis

Psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking) precipitated by cannabis use. Risk is higher with high-potency THC products and in genetically predisposed individuals.

In Depth

Acute cannabis-induced psychosis is dose-dependent and typically resolves within hours to days of cessation. Chronic heavy use, particularly of high-potency products (>15% THC), is associated with increased risk of persistent psychotic disorders including schizophrenia. The risk is substantially higher in individuals with a family history of psychosis or with certain genetic variants (e.g., COMT Val158Met). CBD may counteract THC-induced psychosis — studies show CBD reduces psychotic symptoms and attenuates THC-induced psychotic-like effects.
