Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
A neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. Emerging evidence suggests ECS dysregulation in ASD.
In Depth
The ECS is implicated in ASD — reduced endocannabinoid levels and altered CB1/CB2 receptor expression have been found in ASD patients. Observational studies and small trials suggest CBD-rich cannabis reduces behavioral problems, anxiety, and self-injurious behavior in ASD. A randomized trial of CBD in ASD children showed significant improvements in disruptive behavior. CBDV (cannabidivarin) has been investigated in ASD clinical trials by GW Pharmaceuticals. Larger rigorous trials are needed.
